St. Louis ate a significant portion of Arenado's contract to facilitate a trade to Arizona after two offseasons of failed attempts.
The Cardinals traded Nolan Arenado to the Diamondbacks in January after St. Louis agreed to cover $31MM of the $42MM remaining on his contract. Arenado's no-trade clause had been the primary obstacle, as he maintained a short list of approved destinations. His declining offensive production — a 84 wRC+ in his final Cardinals season — made the trade difficult to execute. Arizona acquired him at a discounted cost given the Cardinals' financial contribution.
