Cardinals Promote Outfielder Nelson Velázquez from Triple-A
St. Louis selected Velázquez's contract after a 40-man roster vacancy opened, giving the 27-year-old his shot at the big league club.

The Cardinals officially selected the contract of outfielder Nelson Velázquez, filling a 40-man roster spot vacated when Jared Shuster was DFA'd weeks ago. Velázquez, 27, signed a minor league deal with St. Louis in the offseason and posted a .232/.344/.420 line with a 101 wRC+ at Triple-A Memphis this year. He brings a solid walk rate but elevated strikeout numbers to the big league roster.
