Mayer lands on IL; Cheng called up to fill Red Sox infield void
Boston's infield depth takes another hit as Marcelo Mayer is placed on the injured list, prompting a same-day call-up of Tsung-Che Cheng.

The Red Sox placed shortstop Marcelo Mayer on the injured list, further thinning an already depleted Boston infield. To fill the roster spot, the club promoted Tsung-Che Cheng from Triple-A Worcester with little lead time. Cheng, 24, had slashed .254/.351/.424 with seven home runs for Worcester and also hit a cycle for the club. The 25-year-old Taiwan native made his Red Sox debut on June 26 against the Yankees at Fenway Park, recording a double.
