The Athletics confirmed that right-hander Justin Sterner underwent a chondroplasty of the medial femoral condyle, ending his 2026 season. He was already on the 15-day IL with right knee chondromalacia and will be transferred to the 60-day IL when the roster spot is needed. Sterner had posted a 3.18 ERA through his first 34 innings this year before a sharp late-season decline that now appears linked to the knee issue. He will not pitch again until 2027.
