In 1974, John underwent an experimental ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction performed by Dr. Frank Jobe, becoming the first player to successfully return from the procedure. The surgery now bears his name and has been performed on hundreds of professional and amateur pitchers. John finished his career with 288 wins and was a four-time All-Star.
