Nationals skipper Blake Butera told reporters that CJ Abrams will gradually move from shortstop to second base, with Nasim Nuñez becoming the everyday shortstop. Abrams has posted a career minus-63 Outs Above Average at short — the worst mark in the majors from 2022–26 regardless of position — including minus-17 this season alone. Despite the defensive concerns, Abrams remains a premier offensive player, slashing .284/.357/.541 with 29 HR and 23 SB this year for a 143 wRC+. His experience at second base is minimal, limited to 66 innings with San Diego in 2022.
