Alcántara pitches in relief two days after starting, earns first career save
The Marlins ace emerged from the bullpen in the ninth inning to preserve a one-run lead, a historically rare feat for an innings leader.

Sandy Alcántara, who leads MLB in innings pitched in 2026, made his first relief appearance in nine seasons on Sept. 16, just 48 hours after throwing 101 pitches as a starter. He recorded the save in a 4-3 Marlins win over the Diamondbacks. No pitcher had recorded a save while leading the league in innings since Orel Hershiser in 1987. Miami remains 7.5 games out of a wild-card spot with nine games left.
