What happened

The Cleveland Guardians announced that Browns cornerback Denzel Ward has purchased a minority ownership stake in the club, making him the latest addition to the franchise's investor group. Per the club's statement, Ward — a Northeast Ohio native who played at Nordonia High School in Macedonia, then Ohio State, before becoming the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft — has spent his entire professional football career in Ohio and recently signed a two-year extension with the Browns that keeps him in Cleveland through the 2029 season.

The Guardians' statement described Ward as a "career Ohioan football star and five-time Pro Bowler," noting his most recent Pro Bowl selection came in 2025. The club credited him with 104 career passes defended and 18 interceptions, credentials that have established him, per the statement, as a premier cover cornerback in the NFL.

He is entering the fourth season of a five-year contract that carried $71.25MM in guarantees and a maximum value of $100.5MM. That deal was followed by a two-year extension adding $52.3MM in guaranteed money to his future income, with an additional $9.9MM available under its terms — a maximum value of $62.2MM on the extension alone. At 74-72, the Guardians are in the thick of a September AL Central race, sitting 2 games back of first place. The club heads to Baltimore on Wednesday, September 9, where Foster Griffin is the probable starter against Shane Baz at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. From there, Cleveland travels to Target Field for a weekend series against the Minnesota Twins, with Parker Messick projected to start Friday, September 11, and Gavin Williams lined up for Saturday, September 12, against opponents yet to be named.

September baseball has a way of making every roster decision feel consequential, and the Guardians have had some of those to manage.
