Cody Bellinger has begun a rehab assignment, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports, with the outfielder targeting a return to the Yankees' active roster by the weekend.

Per earlier reporting, Bellinger has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since July 26. The rehab assignment is the formal step that precedes activation — live game action is the last box to check before New York can bring him back.

What we don't know yet

No activation date has been announced, and the weekend target remains just that — a target. How the rehab games go will shape the timeline, and nothing in the reporting locks in a specific date.

The roster picture around him

Bellinger's return would arrive at a complicated moment on the Yankees' depth chart. Max Fried was placed on the 15-day IL with an elbow bone bruise, though the club has been described as optimistic about a minimal absence. Carlos Rodón, meanwhile, was activated from the IL and started against the Orioles, giving the roster a boost even as Fried stepped out.

Bellinger back in the lineup would give New York another option in a stretch run already being reshuffled by injury and return in roughly equal measure.
