Eduardo Rivera's brief stint on the restricted list is over. Per the Boston Globe's Tim Healey, the Red Sox left-hander has been activated and returned to the Triple-A injured list, where he was already stationed before the personal matter arose.

What happened

Rivera had been on optional assignment with Triple-A Worcester when he landed on the seven-day minor league IL on August 13 with back inflammation, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The restricted list placement came separately, to address a personal matter. Because Rivera was already going to miss time from the back issue, Cotillo noted the personal absence was unlikely to affect his availability unless it stretched on considerably — and apparently it did not.

Where things stand

Back inflammation remains the underlying issue. Rivera is back on the Triple-A IL, so his path to a Boston callup still runs through that recovery first. No timetable for his return to game action appears in the material.

On the 40-man side, the restricted list briefly gave Boston a temporary extra opening — players on that list don't occupy a 40-man spot. The Sox were using 38 spots before the transaction, which meant three openings while Rivera was on the restricted list. With his activation, that arithmetic reverts. The club announced Rivera to the 40-man roster back in April.

In four big league appearances this season, Rivera has allowed seven earned runs across ten innings. His Triple-A line across 55 2/3 innings shows a 2.59 ERA, a 30% strikeout rate, a 12.7% walk rate, and a 52% ground ball rate — the kind of profile that keeps a back-end roster spot warm, assuming the back cooperates.
