Giants designate Buddy Kennedy for assignment, reinstate Bryce Eldridge

What happened

San Francisco needed a 40-man roster spot to activate Eldridge and chose Kennedy, a 27-year-old utility infielder who has spent the summer in organizational limbo. Kennedy began the season with the Giants on a minor-league deal, was selected to the big league roster at the start of June, then was designated for assignment a few weeks later. The club traded him to the Mariners for cash. At the start of August, the Giants brought him back via a waiver claim.

Why it matters
