Jacob deGrom Exits Start vs. Angels With Right Triceps Fatigue

Jacob deGrom did not finish his start against the Angels, exiting early with what the club described as right triceps fatigue, per MLB.com's Jacob Gurvis.

The nature of triceps fatigue — sitting as it does somewhere on the spectrum between routine soreness and something that warrants a longer look — means the Rangers and their fans are now in the familiar, uncomfortable position of waiting for more information. No timetable, diagnosis, or roster move was reported.

Why this lands differently

The timing adds a layer of context. Per a Posterior item from earlier this month, the Braves and Rangers reportedly had a trade agreement in place for deGrom at the deadline, contingent on deGrom waiving his no-trade clause. He apparently did not waive it, which means Texas retained him — and now the arm they kept is the arm that left a game early.

DeGrom had been lined up as a rotation piece for the Rangers' stretch run. A Posterior lineup note from earlier this month had him taking the ball against Baltimore.

What remains unconfirmed

There is no reported severity, no imaging result, and no word on whether deGrom will miss time. "Fatigue" is the club's characterization, and that is the only characterization available. Whether this leads to missed starts is, as of this report, unknown.

The Rangers' rotation depth is worth watching in the background. Jack Leiter began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock earlier this week, and MacKenzie Gore was activated off the paternity list earlier this month — so Texas has been actively managing its pitching inventory.
