Nationals acquire LHP Carson Palmquist from Rockies for cash, option him to Rochester

What happened

The Washington Nationals have acquired left-handed pitcher Carson Palmquist from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash considerations, both clubs announced. Washington subsequently optioned Palmquist to Triple-A Rochester and moved right-hander Max Kranick to the 60-day injured list to create the necessary roster space.

Palmquist had been a Rockies organizational piece since Colorado selected him in the third round of the 2022 draft. His strikeout rate and walk rate were nearly identical, at 15.4 and 14.3 percent respectively, which is a particular kind of symmetry no pitcher is aiming for. He averaged just over 90 mph on his fastball and surrendered 10 home runs in those 34 1/3 innings, per MLB Trade Rumors.

The soft-tossing profile is worth pausing on. A left-hander who does not miss bats at an appreciable rate and does not generate weak contact on the ground is, in the most operational sense, relying on a lot of things going right in the air. Whether the home-run numbers reflect environment, the pitcher, or some combination of both is exactly the kind of question that Triple-A Rochester is now positioned to help answer.

His prospect ranking history suggests evaluators believed in the underlying tools. A No. 8 ranking at Baseball America in 2025 is not a courtesy placement; that reflects genuine organizational conviction. The gap between that ranking and an 8.91 ERA in his first major-league exposure is the story Washington is betting it can help resolve.

Not in the standings sense. The Nationals are 77-85 (.475), sitting fourth in the NL East, 17 games behind the division leader, and eliminated from both the division race and the Wild Card race. The schedule, in other words, is not asking Washington to win a pennant this week. It is asking the organization to develop players, evaluate options, and position itself for whatever comes next. Acquiring a left-hander with prospect history and sending him to Triple-A fits that mandate precisely.

MLB Trade Rumors does not specify the nature of Kranick's injury or any timetable for his return. The 60-day IL designation removes him from the 40-man roster count for the duration, but what put him there remains unspecified in the reporting.

It is also worth noting that Palmquist's option to Triple-A Rochester is a roster assignment, not a development blueprint. What Washington intends to do with him, how long he stays in Rochester, and whether he factors into the major-league picture at any point this season are all questions the transaction itself does not answer.

What to watch

The most straightforward thing to monitor is whether Palmquist's Triple-A performance looks anything like the prospect who ranked eighth in a major-league organization just a year ago. The strikeout-walk symmetry and the fly-ball tendencies that made his 2025 debut so difficult are not necessarily permanent features — they may reflect a pitcher pushed to the majors before the command and pitch mix were ready, or they may reflect something more structural.
