Washington reportedly has its first three starters lined up for the upcoming series against the Marlins, per beat reporter Mark Zuckerman: Kent on Friday, Cavalli on Saturday, and Alvarez on Sunday. Monday, however, is an open question — with Dion, Matt Waldron, Luis Perales, and Livan Hernandez all listed as possibilities.

The Monday puzzle

The uncertainty around the fourth slot is notable given the roster activity surrounding a few of those candidates. Perales was called up from Triple-A Rochester to make his MLB debut and bolster Washington's bullpen, so a potential starting assignment — or at minimum a significant role — would represent a quick escalation for the prospect. Waldron, meanwhile, made what Zuckerman described as what he believes is the first knuckleball thrown in Washington Nationals history just days earlier, so his Monday candidacy arrives with its own subplot already in motion.

What remains unresolved is which of the four names will ultimately get the ball. Zuckerman's report frames it as genuinely open.

Why it matters

The series arrives on the heels of a rough stretch for Washington — manager Blake Butera publicly questioned the team's effort following a 13-1 loss to the Rockies, a rare critical statement from the skipper. How the rotation is constructed for the four-game set carries at least some operational weight in that context.
