Veteran lefty Nestor Cortes joins Philadelphia on a $1.5MM prorated deal, heading to Low-A Clearwater as he builds back from arm surgery.

The Phillies have officially signed left-hander Nestor Cortes to a split contract paying a prorated $1.5MM while on the MLB roster and $250K in the minors. Cortes is recovering from arm surgery after dealing with a left elbow flexor strain and left biceps tendinitis last season. He will be optioned to Low-A Clearwater to build up before potentially joining the big-league rotation. Brian Keller was designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move.
