The Royals placed Bobby Witt Jr. on the injured list, creating an immediate need at shortstop. Kansas City called up Andrew Velazquez to fill the gap on the active roster. To replenish organizational depth, the club also signed veteran infielder Alejo Lopez to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha. Lopez was recently released by Seattle despite a .302/.379/.419 line in 146 Triple-A plate appearances this season.
