Blue Jays designate Joe Mantiply for assignment amid September roster shuffle

The Toronto Blue Jays designated left-hander Joe Mantiply for assignment Monday, the club announced, in a set of roster moves that also brought right-hander Trey Yesavage back from the injured list and recalled right-hander Chad Dallas from Triple-A Buffalo. Right-hander Spencer Arrighetti was optioned in the corresponding moves. What happened

Mantiply, 35, has been part of the Blue Jays organization for the entire season. He came to Toronto on a minor league deal last summer and, after becoming a minor league free agent at season's end, returned on a second minor league pact. The club added him to the 40-man roster on April 5. His season was interrupted when he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in late May, limiting him to 27 innings with the major league club across the full year.

The timing is pointed. With six games remaining and a Wild Card berth as Toronto's only remaining postseason path, per MLB Trade Rumors, the Blue Jays are making decisions about who they want on the mound in games that carry maximum consequence — and Mantiply's September has complicated that calculus.

The move also lands in a week already crowded with injury news. Dylan Cease underwent an MRI on his right shoulder and was scratched from his next scheduled start for the Blue Jays, a development that had already thinned the rotation's margin for error before Monday's moves were made. Yesavage's return addresses that gap directly: he is the scheduled starter Monday against the Orioles, per the club's announcement. And around the same time those injury reports emerged, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. exited a game against the Rangers with lower back tightness — a reminder that the Blue Jays are navigating the final week of a season with their roster under strain from multiple directions.

Yesavage's return had been anticipated. Reports earlier in the week indicated he was on track to come off the injured list for Monday's start after a rehab appearance with Triple-A Buffalo, and the club made the move Monday as expected.

The numbers

Mantiply's season line tells a story with two distinct chapters. In 27 innings with the big league club, he posted a 3.33 ERA, striking out 19.8% of opponents while walking just 4.5% — a walk rate that MLB Trade Rumors described as "terrific." Those are the numbers of a pitcher who, when healthy, was doing his job.

September told a different story. Per MLB Trade Rumors, Mantiply allowed runs in three straight appearances and yielded six runs in 9 1/3 innings since the calendar turned to September. That stretch, more than anything else, appears to have driven the timing of Monday's move.

The velocity context is worth understanding. Mantiply is sitting at 88.5 mph on his sinker this season, per MLB Trade Rumors — but that is not a new development. He has not averaged even 90 mph on his fastball since the 2022 season. His career-high average on his sinker is 91.4 mph. The soft-tossing southpaw has never been a power arm; instead, he has built a career on strong walk rates, ground-ball tendencies, and an ability to keep hitters from squaring him up cleanly. Over more than five years of major league service and 243 innings, he carries a 4.41 ERA. The approach works — until, apparently, it doesn't, and September suggested the margins had narrowed.

Had Mantiply remained on Toronto's roster through the offseason, he would have been controlled through 2027 via arbitration. MLB Trade Rumors notes, however, that the designation suggests the club would likely have outrighted or non-tendered him regardless. The DFA simply moves that conversation to now.

Where the club stands

Toronto enters Monday at 77-79 (.494), sitting fourth in the AL East and 18.5 games back in the division race — eliminated from that chase. The Wild Card picture is narrower but not yet closed: the Blue Jays are 3.0 games back of the cut line, ranked fourth among Wild Card contenders. They arrive on a one-game winning streak.

Six games remain. Per MLB Trade Rumors, Toronto's only path to October runs through a Wild Card berth, and the math requires the Blue Jays to win while the Guardians and/or White Sox lose — a combination the piece describes as requiring a late winning streak to "dovetail with a catastrophic losing streak" for those clubs. Mantiply now has seven days in which the Blue Jays must trade him, release him, or place him on outright waivers — standard procedure following a designation for assignment. What happens next is unresolved. A team looking for a left-handed reliever with a track record of limiting walks and generating ground balls might find the 3.33 ERA this season more interesting than the September numbers. Or not. That part is genuinely open.

The status of Dylan Cease beyond the scratched start also remains unresolved. He underwent the MRI on his right shoulder, but no further update on his availability for the final week has been reported. Similarly, Guerrero Jr.'s lower back tightness — which caused him to exit a game against the Rangers — has not been given a formal timeline or roster designation.

What to watch

The immediate question is whether Yesavage can provide length Monday night. The Blue Jays need innings from their rotation in a week where Cease is unavailable and every game carries postseason implications. Dallas's recall from Buffalo adds a fresh arm to a bullpen that will be asked to cover whatever Yesavage cannot.

Beyond Monday, the Wild Card arithmetic will clarify quickly. Six games is not much runway, and Toronto's margin — at 3.0 games back — leaves almost none. The Guerrero Jr. and Cease situations bear watching as the week unfolds; both players are central to whatever the Blue Jays can put together offensively and on the mound.

As for Mantiply: a soft-tossing lefty with more than five years of service time, a career built on command and contact management, and a 3.33 ERA in his most recent healthy stretch is not obviously without a market. The next seven days will answer that question one way or another.
