Cardinals promote catching prospect Leo Bernal to MLB roster
St. Louis adds 22-year-old switch-hitting catcher Leo Bernal as rosters expand to 28 men on September 1.

The Cardinals are promoting Leo Bernal, a 22-year-old catching prospect, from Triple-A Memphis ahead of their Tuesday game against the Dodgers. Bernal was added to the 40-man roster last November ahead of the Rule 5 Draft and will fill one of two new spots created by the September 1 roster expansion to 28 men. He hit .279/.364/.469 with 16 home runs in 431 plate appearances at Memphis this season. His arrival creates a logjam at catcher, with Pedro Pages, Ivan Herrera, and Jimmy Crooks already on the active roster.
