Cardinals Lock Up JJ Wetherholt on 8-Year, $112.5MM Deal
St. Louis secures its 23-year-old rookie infielder long-term in one of the largest contract commitments in franchise history.

The Cardinals and JJ Wetherholt have agreed to an eight-year extension worth $112.5MM guaranteed, with performance bonuses that could push the total to $132MM. The deal ranks among the largest in Cardinals history, behind only the Goldschmidt and Holliday contracts. At 23, Wetherholt is under one year of service time, placing this extension in the same tier as recent pre-service deals for Kevin McGonigle, Konnor Griffin, and Roman Anthony, though slightly below all three in total value. It is unclear whether the eight years begin in 2026 or 2027.
