The Nationals and Cade Cavalli are reportedly close to a contract extension, though no deal is official yet. The agreement is expected to buy out at least one free agent season beyond his existing club control, which runs through 2029 as a Super Two arbitration player. Cavalli, 28, has emerged as Washington's ace in 2026, posting a 3.12 ERA with a 28.2% strikeout rate over 164.2 innings across 31 starts. After missing nearly all of 2023 and 2024 following Tommy John surgery, he has fully returned to the form that made him a top prospect.
