What happened

Utilityman Ronny Simon was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill the roster spot. O'Hearn was activated off the injured list around the same time this move was made, which adds a layer of roster irony: the player whose absence created Valdez's outfield opportunity is now back, while Valdez himself heads to the shelf.

The Pirates have also been navigating a difficult stretch of health across the roster. A day before this move, All-Star starter Braxton Ashcraft was placed on the 15-day injured list with right arm discomfort, with manager Kelly indicating Ashcraft would not pitch again in 2026 — though no structural damage had been found at that point. Reliever Kirby Yates has also been dealing with recurring injuries and has raised the possibility of retirement. For a club already outside the playoff picture, the injury ledger has been a recurring theme down the stretch.

Valdez's 2026 season line is the kind that generates genuine organizational optimism alongside genuine organizational questions, sometimes in the same breath.

Across 287 plate appearances in 72 games, Valdez has posted a 130 wRC+ and launched 17 home runs. MLB Trade Rumors notes that his combined MLB and Triple-A production projects to a 30-homer campaign. Those are meaningful numbers for a player in his first taste of the majors.

The contact profile, however, is the wart Morgenstern flags directly. Valdez has struck out at a 37.6% clip, with a swinging-strike rate near 15% and a called-plus-swinging-strike rate of 31.9%. Morgenstern notes that among qualified hitters this season, only one — White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami — carries a CSW% above 32%, which gives a useful sense of just how far into outlier territory Valdez's swing-and-miss numbers sit. These were issues in the minors, and big-league arms, as they tend to do, made them more pronounced.

Defensively, the early returns were not encouraging. Valdez posted -5 Defensive Runs Saved across 552 1/3 innings in corner outfield spots. He was particularly rough in left field, where he posted -3 DRS in just seven appearances. Morgenstern notes that Valdez may ultimately be better suited for first base or DH duties — and with O'Hearn back and DH expected to be available next year, the outfield assignment may have been situational rather than permanent.

Simon, the replacement, has hit .281 in 10 games with Pittsburgh this season while moving between the middle infield and corner outfield. His Triple-A numbers at Indianapolis in 2026 are striking: .334/.426/.472, per Morgenstern, along with a career-high 35 stolen bases. He also posted a 129 wRC+ across the Miami and Pittsburgh systems last season. Simon has 37 games of MLB experience across the past two years with the Marlins and Pirates, so he arrives with some familiarity with the level, even if his role will be depth-oriented.

Where the club stands

Pittsburgh enters Sunday at 74-75 (.497), third in the NL Central and 18.5 games back in the division. They are on a two-game losing streak. The Wild Card picture is similarly bleak at 6.5 games outside the cut line, ranked fifth.

Sunday's game at Wrigley Field — the same series in which Valdez was placed on the IL — features Bubba Chandler against Matthew Boyd as the probable pitchers. The Pirates then return home to PNC Park for a two-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, September 15, and Wednesday, September 16.

With September's expanded roster rules allowing 28 active players, the Pirates have some flexibility in how they deploy Simon and manage the remaining weeks. The 10-day IL minimum means Valdez's earliest possible return is constrained regardless of how quickly the hamstring responds — though the severity question Kelly raised publicly means the actual timeline is genuinely open.

What we don't know yet

The central unknown is the severity of the hamstring strain. Manager Don Kelly said explicitly, per ESPN, that the club does not yet have a clear picture of how serious the injury is. That uncertainty makes any timetable speculation premature. If the strain is minor, Valdez could potentially return before the regular season ends. If it is more significant, Morgenstern raises the possibility that this could be the conclusion of his 2026 campaign.

What the Pirates do know — and what Kelly's public comments suggest they are being careful not to get ahead of — is that the diagnosis is still being worked through. A left hamstring strain suffered while running to first base covers a wide range of outcomes, and the club is not yet in a position to narrow that range.

What to watch

The obvious question is whether Valdez returns at all this season, and the answer depends entirely on the evaluation the Pirates are still working through.
