Phillies Plan to Cut Realmuto's Catching Games in 2027
Philadelphia's baseball ops chief confirmed a workload reduction plan for the 36-year-old catcher after a career-worst offensive season.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced at the team's year-end press conference that J.T. Realmuto will catch fewer games in 2027. Realmuto, who led MLB with 122 starts behind the plate in 2026, is physically healthy but open to the reduced workload. The plan may include additional starts at first base. Realmuto posted a career-worst 68 wRC+ over 467 plate appearances in 2026, his first season of a three-year, $45MM deal.
